Greta Bus Crash Memorial Park
The initial brief was to design a small park as a place for respite along a planned regional cycleway.
On June 11, 2023 the tragic circumstances of the Greta bus crash occurred which rocked the local community. Cessnock City Council was requested to install a permanent memorial where people could gather, reflect and grieve the loved ones lost, and the small park in Greta was selected as the most appropriate.
Michael White Landscape Architecture designed a memorial space that is characterised by ten deciduous trees symbolising the ten people who lost their lives. Family and friends have since placed plaques under each tree.
Low-planted mounds and locally occurring native grasses, groundcovers and woodland trees will in time screen the park from the busy adjacent road and create a reflective area for those wanting to pay their respects, along with users of the cycleway.
